Student Admission - Crit Happens: Turning Tabletop Chaos into Clinical Growth

Tabletop gaming in the therapy room is becoming an increasingly popular intervention utilized with clients of all ages. Join Dr. William Nation and Dr. Meagan Henry of John Hopkins University.

Dr. William Nation is a licensed psychologist, speaker, and educator specializing in the intersection of mental health, gaming, and community building. He brings over a decade of experience using tabletop and video games in therapeutic settings to foster connection, resilience, and personal growth. In addition to his clinical work with LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent populations, Dr. Nation is a published author and frequent presenter at conventions and conferences across the country. His work has been featured in outlets such as TIME and the APA Monitor, and he serves on the editorial board of Board Game Academics

Dr. Henry graduated with a PhD in counseling psychology and has a clinical interest in social connection and interpersonal relationships. She loves group therapy and the opportunities it creates to deepen clients’ connections to the people in their lives. She is also interested in novel approaches to mental health and making therapy more accessible. 

Attendees will learn about the literature related to the mental health applications of TTRPGs, hear the first-hand experiences of the presenters in using TTRPGs as clinical tools, and will participate in designing their own therapeutic D&D encounters. Presenters will demonstrate how clinicians can create therapeutic campaigns by assessing client goals, identifying a clinical need, and centering diverse stories.
