Countercultures are described as groups of people who choose to live based on a value system that is deemed significantly different from the standard norm. In practice today, clinicians are beginning to see an increase in countercultures in therapy spaces such as polyamorous marriages, antisocial and hate groups, and families who opt out of traditional schooling. With the varying value systems of these cultures, recognizing the role of substance use and sex may also differ is crucial for ethical and effective treatment. Substances can often be predominant in these cultures, thus demanding clinicians to learn to negotiate discussions surrounding drug use outside of societal norm. This also applies to psychosexual theory and dynamics within these cultures. This workshop will focus on providing research and information on where the two subgroups of countercultures and drug users collide. Psychoeducation as well as effective treatment and individualized recovery systems will be reviewed by presenter.
Chris is a licensed clinical social worker who specializes in substance and process use disorders working out of Columbus, Georgia. Having spent the past 6 years in metro Atlanta, she now works in private practice at Columbus Psychological Associates. Substance use disorders has always been her passion and led her to seek her Certification in Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counseling, as well as a specialization in process use disorders and attachment theory. Chris is also an author and researcher in the field of digital art therapy. She has been published in two textbooks and has presented research in both state and national conferences. She started Let’s Talk About It with the help of her friends in 2023 to highlight the research and clinical care for LGBTQIA+ folks.
